Typically, pain arises when damage or an injury occurs within the body, leading to the nerves transmitting a signal. In the case of neuropathy, though, the nerves themselves have experienced damage.
Neuropathy, or neuritis, is experienced by approximately 20 million people in the United States, including 8 percent of those aged 56 and above. As with many diseases, what you eat can have a huge impact on the pain of neuropathy and the extent to which it develops. Half of diabetics suffer from neuropathy
One of the ill effects of diabetes is damage to the peripheral nervous system, called peripheral neuropathy (PN). Approximately 50% of individuals diagnosed with diabetes experience PN in some form. It occurs most often in patients who have had diabetes for years and can result in various other health problems if left unchecked, explains the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
Nerve pain, also known as neuropathy pain, has grown to epidemic proportions, according to The Neuropathy Association. Currently, 15 to 18 million people in the United States suffer from diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Previous estimates of neuropathy placed the total population at 20 million, but experts now consider that number far too low given the growing ranks of DPN patients.
“We are all gravely underestimating the millions of people struggling and suffering with neuropathies,” argued Neuropathy Association President Tina Tockarshewsky. “It’s time to… finally address it as the public health emergency it is.”
